In The Arsenic Eaters onderzoekt Simon Brugner de historische overtuiging dat de consumptie van arseen, een van de krachtigste mineraalvergiften, gunstig is voor de gezondheid. Zo vond men voor de 20e eeuw veel ‘gifeters’ onder de plattelandsbevolking in de Alpen. Het boek bestaat uit twee delen. Het eerste, visuele deel schetst een mogelijke realiteit waarin het verhaal van de arsenicum-eters begrijpelijk is. Het tweede deel presenteert Brugner’s cultureel-historische onderzoeksbevindingen.

The Arsenic Eaters investigates the historical belief that the consumption of arsenic, one of the most potent mineral poisons, is beneficial to one’s health. Many ‘poison eaters’ were found among the pre-20th century rural population in the eastern parts of the Alps. The book consists of two parts. The first part, a visual study, sketches a possible reality in which the surreal story of the arsenic eaters makes sense. The second part presents Brugner’s cultural-historical research findings.
