Drie tovenaarskinderen zijn uit logeren. Domoli in Siberië, Pief in Japan en Kijfje in Amerika. Douwe Dabbert krijgt van hun vaders het dringende verzoek het drietal op te halen en weer thuis te brengen. Via de kast met duizend deuren belandt hij in een ijskoude omgeving, waar hij samen met Domoli een spannend avontuur beleeft. Met het schip van ijs wordt de tocht voortgezet richting Japan, waar hen een nieuw avontuur wacht.
