Issam Mahfouz schreef De dictator in 1968. Revolutionair voor zijn tijd, maar ook vandaag erg actueel in het licht van de revoluties en omwentelingen in het Midden-Oosten. Libanon's The Daily Star noemde het 'een claustrofobisch meesterwerk over despotisme, waanzin en macht'.
De dictator is het verhaal van een tiran, een gestoord personage, die meent dat hij de langverwachte redder van de mensheid is, en van zijn komische en onvoorspelbare assistent, Saadoun.
