Philipp Melanchton (1497-1560) werkte als theoloog samen met Maarten Luther en werd daarmee naast Luther en Calvijn één van de grondleggers van de Hervorming.
In 1530 stelde hij de 28 punten van de Confessio Augustana op, die de geloofsbelijdenis werd van al de lutheranen in Duitsland.
