The Sonian Forest has been recognised as part of the Unesco World Heritage site 'Ancient and Primeval Beech Forests'. An attractive title for a forest that has never been under agriculture and was already mentioned in charters dating back to the 12th century. For centuries it was a major source of wood and game. Despite land sales followed by large-scale deforestation in the 1830's, this wooded area on the outskirts of Brussels sill covers more than 5,000 ha.
