In dit allereerste boek dat Agatha Christie schreef, is Poirot nog maar net in Engeland aangekomen. Samen met enkele andere Belgische vluchtelingen woont hij in het dorpje Styles St. Mary. Daar wordt zijn hulp ingeroepen door de bewoners van het landgoed Styles, waar een oude dame is vermoord. Poirot, die bij de Belgische politie heeft gewerkt, weet de dader van de moord te ontmaskeren, ondanks tegenstrijdige aanwijzingen.
