Carla Lemarchant komt bij de beroemde detective Hercule Poirot om hulp. Ze vertelt hem dat haar moeder is veroordeeld wegens moord op haar vader en in de gevangenis gestorven is. Dat gebeurde toen Carla nog maar vijf jaar was. Nu is ze eenentwintig en staat op het punt te trouwen. Ze is ervan overtuigd dat haar moeder onschuldig was en vraagt Poirot om het onmogelijke alsnog te bewijzen.
