Op oudejaarsdag zwerven Ward en Bernie over de velden rond de boerderij waar Ward woont. Het hondje Elmer loopt met ze mee. Met z’n drieën komen ze op het erf van Betjeman terecht, een zonderlinge man met een plastic hand, en daar blijven ze net iets te lang. Nog voor het vuurwerk van twaalf uur staat alles in lichterlaaie.
