Op 23 december 1787 vaart het schip Bounty uit, met William Bligh als gezagvoerder. Op 28 april 1789 breekt er muiterij uit en wordt Bligh met een aantal lotgenoten op een open boot gezet. De lotgevallen van Bligh en van de muiters laten zich als een roman lezen.
