Als kolonel Drake op 27 augustus 1859 olie vindt in Titusville ontketent hij daarmee een oil-rush. Om de orde te kunnen handhaven vraagt het gemeentebestuur aan Lucky Luke om sheriff te worden. Na enige tijd krijgt Lucky Luke te maken met Barry Blunt, die zich samen met zijn bende meester wil maken van alle olievelden in Titusville. Al snel leidt zijn schrikbewind van intimidatie en sabotage ertoe, dat hij alle olievelden in bezit heeft, op die van kolonel Drake na, die door Lucky Luke wordt bewaakt.
