In de zomer van 1939 neemt de oorlogsdreiging tastbare vormen aan. De kleine Bing weet daar niets van. Hij weet wel dat zijn broer Moon als soldaat gemobiliseerd is, en dat zijn moeder sindsdien niet meer uit haar slaapkamer komt. Zijn zus twijfelt of ze Moon ooit zullen terugzien.
