A Course in Continuum Mechanics Volume 1

Thermomechanics of Deformation and Constitutive Framework

Description

Continuum Mechanics and Quantum Mechanics are two basic theories of matter and fields. Depending on our objective and the scale of research, either of these theories is at work in one way or another. This book is intended for advanced undergraduate and first year graduate students in mechanical, aeronautical and structural engineering and possibly for applied mathematics. In this book the principal objective has been to expose the mathematical framework as in a detailed form as possible for the benefit of students as to encourage and acquaint them with the wide range of fascinating aspects of modern continuum mechanics. The style and policy of teaching in the book is in a form as is delivered in the classroom for the purpose of clarifying in the simplest possible way the points where mathematical difficulties (not taught in undergraduate courses), arise. This volume contains balance laws of deformation, stress, and thermomechanical behavior for fluids and solids along with a general constitutive framework. Volume 2 contains more in constitutive equations and field equations for the application to boundary-initial-value problems for fluids and solids.
