Die 1. Sinfonie enthält bereits viele typische Elemente der Mahlerschen Musiksprache. Obwohl die für spätere Werke charakteristischen Erweiterungen der Chromatik und Tonalität noch kaum zu finden sind, klingt das Werk durchaus schon spätromantisch progressiv.
