It is unfortunate for devotees of the recorder that J. S. Bach wrote no original compositions for the instrument - except the obbligato parts in the Brandenburg Concertos and in a few of the cantatas. This accounts for the numerous recorder arrangements of Bach works written for other instruments or even for orchestra. These include, for instance, chorales and fugues arranged for larger recorder ensembles, and inventions and similar compositions in versions for smaller groups. The present volume largely comprises arrangements of pieces originally composed for keyboard instruments. The text of the original has been changed as little as possible, and occasional transpositions and alterations to the articulation and the embellishments have been kept to a minimum.
