The Irony of Fate: Wilson and Austria

Bednar, Kurt

Description

The book is the result of the author's focus on Woodrow Wilson`s actions near the end of the Great War in relation to Austria-Hungary and her demise. However, historiography over decades held the opinion that this demise was caused by internal difficulties only. Indeed, the case of the monarchy was considered a fait accompli when the peace conference in Paris opened in January 1919. The book will be a valuable addition to historiography on relations between Austria-Hungary and the United States. This field has been neglected for too long, to the detriment of knowledge of Central and Eastern Europe. Even today it seems that something there is missing, not the Habsburg family empire but the structure that held the area together for centuries. Born 1950, Kurt Bednar published Papierkrieg (Paper War) in 2017 (Studienverlag). In 2022 he published Transatlantic Relations and the Great War: Austria-Hungary and the United States. More intensive research in US libraries and -archives led to the present book.
