It is July, 1934 and Liverpool is in the grip of excitement as the new George V tunnel opens. Grace's thoughts are far away in Australia, where she plans to emigrate with her cousin. At the last moment, Grace's father forbids her to go. When widower Ben crosses paths with Grace the two go on to marry. As years pass and the Second World War rages, life changes beyond recognition. Ben is called up to fight, and the couple's time apart only serves to strengthen their affections.
