1942. Following a chance encounter with an American army officer in Liverpool, 21-year-old Megan Lloyd decides to do her bit for the war effort by establishing a place of refuge for young women left pregnant and destitute following ill-fated love affairs with American GIs or passing sailors. But she is unprepared for the challenges that lie ahead.
