Regarded by many as the greatest of the Impressionists, Claude Monet (1840-1926) was encouraged early in his career to paint outdoors, accurately rendering atmospheric effects and producing superb works that brilliantly record the transient effects of light. Late in life, beset by increasing blindness, he painted large, vibrantly colored subjects that eventually came to represent the most sophisticated stage of Impressionism.
