The author walked the 300 miles across Crete, tackling four mountain ranges, high slopes and numerous gorges. Relying on the famed hospitality of the Cretans, his only plan was to begin in the east at Easter and finish at Whitsun in the extreme west, at the Monastery of the Golden Step.
