In 1862 Gerrman Unionists from the Texas Hill Country settlements were ambushed on the Nueces River by a force of Texas state units - in the aftermath of that clash, the Unionists were fugitives ... or dead. A native of the Hill Country, descended from families who were on both sides of the Civil War, W. Paul Burrier examines the background of the Union-sympethetic insurgency which culminated in that fatal clash on the banks of the Nueces River.
